HOW TO INSTALL: Citrix XenApp 6 Fundamentals on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 - (Installation & Fixes) - Fully Working!

Updated 26.07.2019

Many of you including myself took a slap on the face with the really "not so great" Citrix XenApp 6 Fundamentals installation on Windows x64 Std 2008 R2 SP1 Server!

Here are the steps needed to make it work right away!

1. Software:

  • Clean install of  Windows x64 Std 2008 R2 SP1 Server iso (YES with SP1).
  • Do not run Windows Update after OS install!
  • Install/Add Feature .Net 3.5.1 (Only that not full set)
  • Install/Add Feature Desktop Experience
    Reboot after features installation (prompted)
  • XAF_6_0_0_ML_dvd.iso (Citrix XenApp Fundamentals 6
    NOTE:
Use VM and snapshots for ease (optional).
NOTE2: Do NOT try to install XAF on a domain controller.

2. Set network/ip, create TEAM if needed (and have 2 NICs for redundancy) and join to the domain.

IMPORTANT
: Always reboot as needed and always use/logon with the same domain admin account you have started with!

You can disable (optional) Windows Firewall and enable Remote Desktop Client for easy install if you prefer. It will be enabled later on anyway.

3. Make snapshot at this point while you have a nice and clean machine.

4. Install following roles from SERVER MANAGER:
Application Server + Remote Desktop Server (Web Server will be installed during setup without errors).
The first 3 roles have all you need for the Xenapp 6 Funds. Follow the steps and do not add anything extras at this point!
* When asked in the RD Role add the RD Host service and the RD Licensing (only the two).
* When asked select the RDP client connection bottom option for ease
* When asked select PER SEAT/USER type of license,

Rest as recommended.
Reboot when asked and login with same account for roles to complete the installation.

5. Open RD Host Role and in the settings select and ADD the local name as your LICENSE Server and then in your:
Start>Administration Tools>Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Licensing Manager
Select your server to activate it and add it to you A.D. Terminal Server License Servers

6. Copy the XAF iso locally and extract it or mount in VM

7. Don't bother run the autorun, just go to SETUP.EXE right click and run as ADMINISTRATOR!
*If by mistake you run SETUP with a local admin account it will fail. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Citrix Licensing.
Then retry as above and with domain admin account you been using all along.

NOT NEEDED ANYMORE IF STEPS FOLLOWED CORRECTLY
"IMPORTANT
:
Open your SERVICES.MSC and sort by LOG ON AS . Top should display NETWORK SERVICE account!  You need to press F5 with one hand and other once setup reached next step. You will notice that Citrix SMA  and CITRIX FUNDAMETALS services will install one after the other! BUT QUICKSTART  will install ok as LOCAL ACCOUNT and then it will restart them and make them to run with XAFServiceAccnt.
ONCE you see this on your services list (will be on top) double click and change it back to LOCAL SERVICE. DONE!"

8. Things should go smooth! And your install will complete and ask you to restart.
NO FAILURE
After reboot CONNECT with SAME ACCOUNT so it can finish.

NOTE
- You can also get latest License Server from Citrix Downloads and Install
This is file I used in the past (to Fix 500Error Licence Server via upgrade)
"Citrix_Licensing_11.12.1_Build_14100.zip"
-And latest on a clean install also seemed to work ok and gave me no errors:
"Citrix_Licensing_11.15.0.0_BUILD_27000.zip"
- In case you get an error that the license server not running it is highly recommended to run Hotfix Rollup (Recommended): "XA600W2K8R2X64R02_rollup Pack 2.msp"

9. Start the Quick Start and Citrix Delivery Services Console to configure your server. Configure published app or desktop, policies etc
